Point Collar
A button-less shirt collar with points aiming straight down at the ground and coming together in a point. You would use a tie with a small knot.

Button-down Collar
A shirt collar held in place by buttons fastening through the collar at the point the collar attaches to the body of the shirt. Preferably you would not use this shirt with a dress suit. This shirt tends to give a suit a more casual look. Point or spread collar would be better for a suit.

Spread Collar
A dress shirt collar with points spreading out from the neck at 45-degree angles and leaving a wide area for a tie.
