Why The Tie Will Never Die!

The necktie distinguishes a man’s appearance, perhaps more than any other single article of clothing. Surely there’s been a move away from suits and ties toward “business casual” in many work settings over the years. But when you really want to impress someone, the tailored suit with just the right shirt & tie combination is the way to go.

Neckties are still mandatory in many formal settings even today. Bankers, financial advisers, attorneys, politicians, diplomats, news anchors – these are just some of the professions in which you still expect men to wear ties every day. Many sales jobs require jackets and ties. Even more casual oriented men will suit up complete with the tie when making that big presentation or speech. And lets face it. The tie is the centerpiece of the 2 and 3-piece suit. It adds a crowning splash of color and design that, combined let’s say with a matching pocket square, can completely transform the look of a particular suit.

The Exclamation Point in the Suit

There’s a subtle but powerful statement made by wearing a necktie. The tie makes any formal suit complete. There is a thoroughness to completing a man’s outfit with a tie, and therefore it is a statement of respect. We believe there will always be a strong market for neckties when you consider how well they complete a well dressed man’s look.

Ties can send a message too. The pattern, colors, backgrounds and art designs displayed on the tie can send a signal about the wearer’s mood or what kind of event he’s attending; festive, solemn or business.  The tie’s message can be safe and neutral as well. Some of the most common traditional designs are patterns such as stripes, paisley, dots, plaids, knitted and florals. Conversational ties have fashion-forward designs, themes and pictorial images. They can be great conversation starters and are just fun to wear!

So now we can see why the tie will never die.

George’s Apparel carries a large selections of beautiful neckties. We have specialists who will assist you choose the perfect ties to go with your wardrobe. Feel free to call us or stop by the store if you have any questions about men’s business and formal wear.   (603) 622-5441

Big Guys Have Advantages

Looking great is icing on the cake.

It’s a statistical fact that men over 6 feet tall are financially more successful on average than their shorter counterparts. It may seem unfair but human nature is what it is. Larger men tend to command more presence in a room. Physically looking up to someone engenders respect for his physical stature. That respect extends psychologically to perceptions of social and business influence.

Big guys can take full advantage of their physiological blessings! They can leverage the success combination of having a commanding physical presence donned with comfortable, nice fitting suits that look great on them. On the other hand, poor fitting suits look especially goofy on big men which can lead to embarrassment.

One of the nagging issues large men have is finding clothes that fit and actually look good!  There are plenty of manufacturers of big & tall suits as well as retailers that carry big & tall sizes. The problem so many big guys have is getting suits tailored properly to their individual sizes and unique builds.

It’s the tailoring, stupid!

Big & tall tailoring is a specialty skill that very few retailers genuinely offer. Most men’s clothing stores provide tailoring services that are ironically “one size fits all.” In other words, they make no distinction for big & tall customers. It’s only a matter of numbers – measurements & sizes. Experienced big & tall tailors take other factors into account that are critically important for proper fit and comfort.

There’s more to it than meets the eye. Fabrics behave much differently on larger frames. The drape of cloth on a 6’ 5” man will look and move differently than it will on a 5’ 10” guy. A really good tailor knows this intuitively and makes subtle adjustments that make all the difference for each individual customer.

There’s an old adage that in life “attitude is everything” but in the world of big professional men, tailoring is everything!  A poor fitting suit is magnified and more obvious on a large frame. So if you’re a big man and want to take advantage of your genealogical endowment, find a tailor who specializes in fitting big & tall men. Eyeball their customers to see how they look. If you see a large man looking exceptionally well dressed, ask him the name of his tailor. When you find a clothier who suits you up really nicely, you may have just hit pay dirt!

George’s Apparel loves to work with big & tall men. We have specialist tailors inside the store who will assist you to dramatically improve how you look and feel in a suit. Feel free to call us or stop by the store if you have any questions about special size tailoring. (603) 622-5441

Game on. Suit up!

In a world that’s been going casual, first on Fridays and then creeping into midweek, the men’s fashion industry is now undergoing a bit of renaissance by bringing suits back into mainstream business and social dress preferences. These aren’t the classic two piece business suits of which subtle changes in style are almost indistinguishable from year to year or even era to era. These new suits are bespoke and noticeably different.

According to Fashionising.com, men’s fashion trends are greatly different from women’s. They exist, yes, but their cycle moves much slower. Nowhere is that truer than in men’s suit trends. We are, however, in the midst of a significant shift in men’ fashion trends right now and it’s toward fitted suits.

Slim fit suits, as they are commonly called, are designed to fit the healthier male frame and the more athletic build. Flat fronts replace pleated pants. Jackets are pulled in at the waist and broadened at the shoulders. Worn with and without ties, these suits are popular with young and active professional men. Let’s face it, these suits look pretty cool! Rather than draping men in a staid look, slim fit suits give guys the look of being dressed for action. They’re not so classic-conservative as to say: “I must be a banker, lawyer or stockbroker.” The slim fit suits have the look that says: “Let’s move, we’re out to make things happen!”

Suits and ties are on the rise.

One might think the long term economic downturn would have a negative impact on men’s formal, business and casual wear spending. On the contrary, MR Magazine’s fashion editor, Karen Alberg Grossman, points out that “…looking stylish (and dressing up) is very much on the minds of young people these days, whether they’re changing the world or otherwise. According to recent stats from consumer research firm NPD Group, men’s dress-up for the 12 months ending March 2012 showed impressive gains:  men’s nested suits up 0.8 percent, suit separates up 29 percent, sportcoats up 16.2 percent, dress shirts up 16 percent and neckwear up 23 percent. That’s more men wearing more suits and ties than we’ve seen in quite some time!”

The new fitted suits have livened up the men’s fashion business more than any trend in quite a while.  So if you’re one of those guys who takes care of himself and likes to look good, you’ll enjoy wearing a suit that fits the body you work hard to keep fit.

George’s Apparel closely follows all of the latest styles in fine men’s clothing and we are always happy to answer questions or offer suggestions.

Customer Dialog and Relationships at George’s

Please read about a recent George’s Apparel customer experience which moved us to share his story.

“I would first like to thank the staff of Georges Apparel for “making my day,” in particular Cy Lombardo and Holly Auger (also a shout out to Bernie for his sense of humor).  One never knows the impact that a brief moment of kindness, caring, and professionalism can have on a personal friend or a stranger.  Nor what one says or does (positive or negative) in any one single moment could easily alter or change a persons’ day.  One just never knows.
My name is Danny O’Malley and I reside in Leominster, Ma.  Yesterday after my cousin passed, I was asked to assist in carrying her casket.  The services were to be tomorrow evening and Saturday morning.  I was very saddened with her passing and needed “apparel” that was appropriate, was in style, and actually fit.

Due, in part, to becoming an immediate care taker for my elderly mother, this past year had become a year of inactivity and a somewhat of a challenge to my waistline.  Being a typical male of mature age, I had not shopped for a suit in some time and was on a quest to purchase something appropriate for the my cousins service and also to double for a civil ceremony for my own wedding in a few weeks (1st for both of us). Today was further complicated by personal issues with my mothers deteriorating health.

I tried two shops in the Nashua area and neither one could fit me nor accommodate my needs, but, they both recommended “Georges in Manchester.”  They were not sure of the address, and being from Leominster I hadn’t even heard of Georges Apparel.  I had to make a stop at The Traders Joe’s Market in Nashua, so I asked a clerk if he had heard of Georges in Manchester?  He assured me he had and promptly gave me directions, but in doing so, he made a statement that was almost verbatim from my previous two stops.  “ It is a caring family owned business that will give you individual attention and I am sure they will have what you will need.  They will most certainly take care of you there.  You can’t go wrong.”  What a great testament!

Due to the combination of a lack of “apparel” success, nothing fitting, and a heavy burden of immediacy for tomorrows event, I was in a state of despair and discouragement.   But the testament from those three individuals gave me a sense of encouragement and sent me off to find Georges Apparel in Manchester.  I did find Georges Apparel and was promptly greeted with attitudes of professionalism, problem solving, and a most caring and supportive demeanor.  Nothing seemed to be a problem and the two previously mentioned professionals took care of all the details and quickly became my “problem solvers.”  They did not have my particular size and color in stock but they were able and willing to extensively alter the jacket and trousers (I believe it might have been easier to try and alter me) to meet my needs.  I had the added stress of having an hour drive ahead of me and was on a timeline to relieve a home care professional staying with my mother.  Again, this was not a problem and everything was done and completed within 90 minutes.

My experience reminded me of “days gone past” when people took pride in their product, professionalism, and made everyone feel welcome and valued.  People were not just a paycheck to employees but a person with value, nor was assisting a customer just a job but a prideful profession.  I am a retired educator and sadly I have found that many of these values have been lost or discarded along the way, but, not at Georges Apparel.  Thank you and please “continue to continue” doing what is right and what you know is of value and does work.

Thank you again Georges Apparel and have a “boogieful” day,

Danny”

Why do men never button the bottom button of your suit, sports jacket, vest or Cardigan sweater?

King Edward VII, “Bertie”, son of Victoria (1841 – 1910, King 1901 – 1910) was so heavy that he could not get the bottom button fastened on his vest or to be more historically kind, maybe he just forgot.  His subjects taking it as a fashionstatement followed his lead and today most men’s suits, sports jackets or vests are not designed to button the bottom button.

The tradition of not buttoning the bottom button may have also come from the early waistcoats, which were very long.  It may have been out of necessity of being able to walk that the bottom buttons were left undone.
