Game on. Suit up!
In a world that’s been going casual, first on Fridays and then creeping into midweek, the men’s fashion industry is now undergoing a bit of renaissance by bringing suits back into mainstream business and social dress preferences. These aren’t the classic two piece business suits of which subtle changes in style are almost indistinguishable from year to year or even era to era. These new suits are bespoke and noticeably different.
According to Fashionising.com, men’s fashion trends are greatly different from women’s. They exist, yes, but their cycle moves much slower. Nowhere is that truer than in men’s suit trends. We are, however, in the midst of a significant shift in men’ fashion trends right now and it’s toward fitted suits.
Slim fit suits, as they are commonly called, are designed to fit the healthier male frame and the more athletic build. Flat fronts replace pleated pants. Jackets are pulled in at the waist and broadened at the shoulders. Worn with and without ties, these suits are popular with young and active professional men. Let’s face it, these suits look pretty cool! Rather than draping men in a staid look, slim fit suits give guys the look of being dressed for action. They’re not so classic-conservative as to say: “I must be a banker, lawyer or stockbroker.” The slim fit suits have the look that says: “Let’s move, we’re out to make things happen!”
Suits and ties are on the rise.
One might think the long term economic downturn would have a negative impact on men’s formal, business and casual wear spending. On the contrary, MR Magazine’s fashion editor, Karen Alberg Grossman, points out that “…looking stylish (and dressing up) is very much on the minds of young people these days, whether they’re changing the world or otherwise. According to recent stats from consumer research firm NPD Group, men’s dress-up for the 12 months ending March 2012 showed impressive gains: men’s nested suits up 0.8 percent, suit separates up 29 percent, sportcoats up 16.2 percent, dress shirts up 16 percent and neckwear up 23 percent. That’s more men wearing more suits and ties than we’ve seen in quite some time!”
The new fitted suits have livened up the men’s fashion business more than any trend in quite a while. So if you’re one of those guys who takes care of himself and likes to look good, you’ll enjoy wearing a suit that fits the body you work hard to keep fit.
